Don’t be fooled by what Katy Perry may have you believe, writing an anthem is an incredibly difficult task. But writing a veritable indie-pop anthem? That is so much harder that it drove MGMT to vow never to come close to writing one again.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart make it seem deceptively easy. They make all the requisite nods to jangly-80s guitar bands, stargazing 90s atmospherics and the vocal bellowing and harmonising of 60s beach-bands. But their music never feels dated or kitschy; there’s a quality to hearing their work that it makes it seem like an old favourite – recovered from a dark recess of your music collection. The second single, ‘Eurydice’, off of their new album Days of Abandon showcases that particular talent as the rollicking song careens towards its open-eyed and heady conclusion. It’s music to blast on road trips, music to break out into white-girl dances alone at home to and music  that provides that uplifting sense of pleasure that is so rare. It seems like the secret to indie-gold is writing songs about Greek tragedies
