Yesterday, the news of DFA boss James Murphy’s very own blend of espresso came close to dwarfing all other stories in music news. Fortunate, then, that Philadelphia ambient rockers The War on Drugs swooped in to save the integrity of music journalists worldwide with the release of beautiful new single ‘Red Eyes’ and announcement of Lost in the Dream scheduled to drop in March.
Achieving inter-album continuity while simultaneously evading the bugbear of blatant repetitiveness is a complex feat. Helmsman Adam Granduciel and co have admirably picked up where 2011’s Slave Ambient left off. With this bunch, at least on the song title alone, it’s difficult to tell whether the bloodshot eyes are symptomatic of tears, dust, the devil’s lettuce or perhaps all three. Aurally, the track is smooth, uplifting and – in steadfast fidelity to the band’s mantra – smacks of mobility towards a dream-like destination. It’s a sumptuous teaser for LP3.
