To an unexpecting and, frankly, undeserving global audience, Thom Yorke broke the news that he was releasing a new album entitled Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes and was immediately available on an original BitTorrent format. For a man who has been at the vanguard of cutting edge approachs to pop music, the surprise in itself was not much of a surprise.

‘A Brain In A Bottle’ is the first single and opener to the album that sees him retracing and exploring a lot of steps he traversed with his previous solo effort The Eraser and parts of Radiohead’s The King of Limbs. Built from the same moaning and warbling synths as ‘The Gloaming’, Yorke stretches his distinctive falsetto to enmesh with the equally distinctive and fragile production from Nigel Godrich. From what is an array of aural delights, everything culminates around the pulse of a laser-like sound effect and Yorke whispering over the beat and even for an album probably served as a stop-gap before the next Radiohead project, he still sounds about ten thousand kilometres ahead of everyone else.
