Like fellow Montréalais outfits Grimes, Blue Hawaii and Arcade Fire, the guitar-pop quartet TOPS can do nothing wrong. ‘Outside’ is the second single to be released from Picture You Staring, the group’s sophomore LP which is out 2 September via Arbutus Records.

The song follows the elegant jubilance of ‘Way To Be Loved’, but sports darker, sombre themes. “You look at me as if you know what it’s like / In the shadow of a street light,” whispers Jane Penny with distinct, velvety vocals and a subtle French accent. Musically, ‘Outside’ is an deliberate throwback to Berlin’s iconic Top Gun power ballad ‘Take My Breath Away’. TOPS recapture the 1980s-style sensuality of Berlin’s legacy and add to it the dreamlike ambience that cloaked Tender Opposites (2012). With ‘Way To Be Loved’ and ‘Outside’ exhibiting their creative diversity, Picture You Staring is set to be TOPS’ best effort yet.
