It’s difficult to describe the music that Robert Alfons and Maya Postepski craft. And craft must be the operative word, for all their ominous synths and Alfon’s hypnotic vocals, they always seem to be slightly too grim for synth-pop and far too much fun to be described as anything darker. So then what defines them must be their finesse and their uniqueness: their ability to twin darkness and lechery with an out-of-control euphoria.
But even that seems to fall short of the truth. Perhaps this is one of those songs, or even bands, which seem impossible to put into a box. Perhaps all we can do is listen to this song – to the moment when Alfons lets go of his control and explodes into what must be one of the most capturing choruses that will be heard this year. And sometimes a song is so dark, and yet so ebullient, that there can be no further description: it quite literally leaves the listener speechless.
