TV On The Radio teased at a new direction when they released the mightily impressive singles ‘Mercy’ and ‘Million Miles’ last year. The first single, ‘Happy Idiot’, off their upcoming album, Seeds, is further proof of the cleaner and unfussy direction they showed last year.

The three-minute song boldly nods at new wave and dance-punk and finds Tunde Adebimpe’s voice never really getting into 5th gear as he sounds lovelorn and world-weary. But the seeming simplicity of the band’s lyrics hints towards darker themes as he sings, “What you don’t know won’t hurt you yet / ignorance is bliss / I’m a happy idiot / waving at cars”.  Long before contemporaries such as St. Vincent and EMA grappled with emotional disconnection in the digital age, TVOTR tackled love in the post-2000s on Dear Science and they seem to be doing the same again here. As Dave Sitek and Kyp Malone’s guitars careen around Tunde’s voice in the last few seconds, ‘Happy Idiot’ reminds us that as long as they remain this good, we will always need TV On The Radio.
