It hardly seems like six months could go by without hearing new output from garage rock’s young, incredibly talented and prolific prodigy Ty Segall. For all the talk of Segall’s seemingly ceaseless output, it is hard to forget that he is yet to release anything that has not been excellent. From the big booming psych of Twins to the noisy clamour of Slaughterhouse, he manages – despite the short recording time – to always put his best foot forward. But now more established and with a sense of clout, his new release Manipulator gestated for 14 months of careful and deliberate recording.

The first product of the new album is the breezy ‘Susie Thumb’ and it is an impressive statement of intent. Harking back to surf-rock’s glory days, its catchy melody and carefree spirit belies the fact that it marks a clear upward progression in Segall’s songwriting. It careens and flexes with sunbursts of guitar layered over each other to rich effect. It is a single that fits comfortably next to his best efforts such as ‘Girlfriend’ and ‘Easy Ryder’ and will have you pining for summer and what is sure to be the glorious Manipulator.
