In November last year, Cape Town rapper Uno July recorded the Zero Hour Zone LP at Red Bull Studios in his home city. The entire project – recording, mixing, mastering, a video shoot and a launch – took place in 24 hours. But not everything went as planned.
A power cut at Red Bull Studios interrupted things, just as he was recording the second last song on the project, so the LP had to be finished at the Cape Audio College in Observatory. Time was an issue, and as a result, Reason’s verse on the song ‘Guess What I’m Doing’, couldn’t be finalised. “For some reason, it did not fit in the grid of the song. We tried everything,” said Uno July when I interviewed him last year.
Well, the verse clearly fits the grid now. This morning, Uno released the song, and we’re glad he did. It’s produced by Cape Town-based producer DJ Skinniez (do yourself a favour and get on this guy’s SoundCloud page – quick).
‘Guess What I’m Doing’ is a catchy song with no hook, save a repeated refrain, “Guess what I’m doing” repeated after every four bars. Uno and Reason both do justice to the beat with light-hearted verses and Instagram caption-ready lines (“They call me the future because I got the entire metro boomin’”).
Focused and determined as ever, Uno July has been hard at work. He’s already released two videos in 2017 – one for “Native Yards 57”, which features YoungstaCPT, and another for “FokofPolisieKar”, from the Zero Hour Zone LP.
Contra Gang, the crew Uno’s a part of, also just released their first EP called The Code.
